Vitalduct

Revitalizing Tanah Merah MRT Viaduct site into a Vibrant Park Space

  • By re-furbishing MRT carriages to hosts new public amenities such as pop-up stores/cafes/workshops and creatively integrating them along the 1km stretch of Tanah Merah MRT viaduct, "Vitalduct" aims to transform the decommissioned platform into a dynamic multifunctional space for community bonding and recreation. Access to the re-invented viaduct is facilitated through sculptural ramps, spiralling around the existing pillars that elevate from a re-imagined park below, weaving the two spaces into one seamless pedestrian-friendly journey. Featuring lush greenery, meandering footpaths and bioengineered waterway that connects the existing Ketapang and Bedok rivers, the grassland under the viaduct is naturalized into new wetland, creating a green oasis for visitors and wildlife to enjoy.

Taking a harmonious approach of urban rejuvenation and ecological enhancement, "Vitalduct" envisions a new car-lite zone in the heart of Tanah Merah while fostering community engagement and environmental sustainability, making it an attractive haven for human, fauna and flora alike.

A leftover urban space in the mid of East Singapore

How can we transform both 1) above and 2) under viaduct space?

Under Viaduct

We want to turn the existing grassland and drain lines into ecologically friendly bioengineered floodplain gardens for the community!

Featuring spiral staircases seamlessly integrated with the revamped Tanah Merah MRT viaduct structure, lush greenery, meandering footpath and bioengineered waterway that connects the existing Ketapang and Bedok rivers, Vitalduct aims to rejuvenate the grassland under the decommissioned platform into new mangrove wetland park, creating an attractive haven for human, fauna and flora alike.

Above Viaduct

By re-furbishing MRT carriages to hosts new public amenities such as pop-up stores/cafes/resting pavilion and creatively integrating them with green features along the elevated 1km stretch of Tanah Merah MRT viaduct, the proposal aims to re-vitalize the decommissioned platform into new biophilic car-lite multifunctional space for community bonding and recreation.
