Education and Research as the Foundation for Singapore Agriculture Industry’s Transformation
Singapore was once a self-sufficient society that produces nearly all its food. Farming accounts for 4% of the GDP of Singapore in 1965. and about 9% of the total population was actively engaged in agricultural activities. Currently, less than 1% of the land is used for food production. Singapore produces only 10% of the food supply. Not many young people are joining the farming industry. In 2010, only 1.3% of the population was actively engaged in agricultural activities. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that Singapore beef up its own food production by developing local farming industry. The current solution of importing 90% of its food from overseas will not be practical in the future.
Responding to the growing issue of food security, Singapore is putting more emphasis on developing its farming industry into one that is high yield and viable. The thesis critiques on the current approach of simply pushing for technology adoption and provision of more farming spaces, it believes that the approach is not perfect in aiding the transformation of the industry.
